This textbook is designed specifically for upper-division courses in general parasitology. It emphasizes principles by illustrating them with material on the biology, physiology, morphology, and ecology of the major parasites of humans and domestic animals. The authors have found that these are of most interest to most students. Other parasites are also included if they are of unusual biological interest.

The first three chapters provide important definitions and principles of evolution, ecology, immunology, and pathology of parasites and parasitic infections. This is followed by chapters on individual groups ranging from protozoa to arthropods. The presentation of each group is independent of whether students have studied the groups presented in previous chapters, so the order may be changed as desired by the instructor.The authors have strived for readability by supplementing the presentation with photographs, drawings, electron micrographs, and tables.
