About the Author
Angela Норе-Murray has dedicated her life to the practice and study of all aspects of healthcare, both complementary and orthodox. Spanning nearly 40 years, her career began as a podiatrist in the NHS. Moving to the United States in 1979, Angela gained a Master’s degree in Nutrition and Health Counselling. In Boston’s Lemuel Shattuck Hospital she spent five years in the ground-breaking Pain and Stress Relief Clinic both as an intern and then running the nutrition modality. This clinic, developed by Professor Ted Kaptchuk, was one of the first of its kind to treat chronic pain and stress related disorders using a multi-disciplinary approach combining complementary medicine and conventional practices.
America gave Angela the opportunity to study reflexology, Chinese diagnostics, massage and counselling. During this time she was introduced to Ayurveda by two of its foremost exponents. Dr Vasant Lad and Dr Robert Svoboda. This meeting led to training in Ayurvedic Medicine with them both over a number of years, before returning to England at the end of 1989. At the same time, she was initiated into the Advaita tradition whose perennial philosophy has guided her life like a golden thread.
In 1997 Angela gained a BSc in Osteopathy. She was the one of the first students to enroll as an Ayurvedic practitioner in the UK College of Ayurveda at Middlesex University in 2001, gaining an MSc in 2009.
Angela practises at the Hale Clinic in central London and from her home in Berkshire. As well as Ayurveda For Dummies, she has written another book, and many articles for journals and magazines. Outside academia she has practised yoga and meditation for 30 years. For the last 20 years she has travelled extensively around the world running retreats, lecturing at conferences and teaching students.
Angela has passed on the knowledge in this book, which she has garnered through many years, in the hope that it will find fertile ground and encourage further study.

Everyone deserves better health.
My search for a medical system that truly encompassed the whole /г I being began when I was 19 years old and studying the biomechanics of the lower limb at podiatry school. A sense of deep unease was growing within me because I realised that a problem in the knee, for example, may be related to the whole of the skeletal structure and not Just to the part of the body we were allowed to take care of. Alongside this was the realisation that a disease entity can present a very different picture in people with differing constitutions.
Help arrived for me in 1986 when a doctor came to the hospital to give a talk on Ayurveda, called the mother of all healing systems. Dawn broke for me and shone a light on a system of healing that is so elegant yet so simple in its formation.
Coming from at least 5.000 years of human experience. Ayurveda really is the “prima materia” (first matter) of all medical modalities. Ayurveda is a system in which the healers have a responsibility to keep themselves well, along with their patients. Encompassing wellness of body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda encourages vitalisation that extends into your every cell.
I hope this book fuels in you the enthusiasm to try Ayurveda for yourself and incorporate it into your daily life, which will benefit and be enhanced by it….
