A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
First published in 1929, the novel is largely autobiographical. Like the protagonist, the author served on the Italian front, was wounded, and ended up in a Milan hospital. And it was here that his romance with a nurse began. These events became the basis for the novel.
The author transferred his own personality and experiences to his character – the American architect Frederick Henry, who went to Italy as a volunteer to take part in the First World War. Here a difficult fate awaits him: from the first military skirmishes to desertion and escape.
This is a book about love, about war, about rash actions and ruined fates of millions of people around the world. This is a lively and sincere story, which was experienced by Ernest Hemingway himself. It became a real discovery for world literature. Not for nothing in his time Francis Scott Fitzgerald called “Goodbye, Guns!” a modern classic.
