First published in 1929, the novel is largely autobiographical. Like the protagonist, the author served on the Italian front, was wounded, and ended up in a Milan hospital. And it was here that his romance with a nurse began. These events became the basis for the novel.

The author transferred his own personality and experiences to his character – the American architect Frederick Henry, who went to Italy as a volunteer to take part in the First World War. Here a difficult fate awaits him: from the first military skirmishes to desertion and escape.

This is a lively and sincere story, which was experienced by Ernest Hemingway himself. It became a real discovery for world literature.
